Experience
The submissions were thematically based on the ideas of love, compassion and empathy, and symbolize "an axe for the frozen sea inside of us," as Franz Kafka put it. This was the artistic challenge of the first Beyond Music Project. 110 new collaborations were submitted. With the help of legendary producer and Grammy award winner Larry Klein, 10 songs were chosen for the first album, created by 23 artists from 17 countries.

Water
In this song, water is a metaphor for the emotional connection between people which can bridge cultures and cross borders.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
“This song immediately had an impact on me! Aside from the lyrics being so pertinent in this time and well-crafted, the syllabic correlation between melody and lyric is very elegant. The music of the song is well matched to the lyric, and Sheryl Gambo is a wonderful vocalist. Edward Glumov and Sandro Friedrich have done great work on the track as well, and I’m looking forward to working with all and the great “house” band that we will have."
-
Ma Ding Wo Avale One
This song (translation „I love you just the way you are“) is a mother's ode to her trisomic child. She tells her how much she loves her beyond her difference.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"This collaboration is illustrative of the power of joyous simplicity. It immediately connected with me. Danielle Eog Makedah has an amazingly inviting and appealing signature to her voice, and the work that John Lumpkin did on this song is very inspiring and appealing in it’s simplicity in framing Danielle’s voice."
-
El Clavel del Aire
The song (translation “Carnation of the air”) talks about freedom, about that free spirit that we need to blossom and fulfil.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"This collaboration between Mariana Baraj and Msafiri Zawose jumped out at me right away. The braiding together of Spanish, Swahili, and English feels very natural, as does the weaving together of stylistic elements from Africa, Argentina, as well as contemporary production ideas. It bridges these cultures effortlessly, and the singing is evocative and infectious."
-
Matumaini
The song tells a heartfelt story of hope. Through tough times and circumstances in life, receiving or giving love is the best way to prevail.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"Another immediately alluring song, this track weds African elements as well as dialect with western harmonic elements seamlessly. Syssi Mananga has a beautiful character to her voice, and I am very excited to work with her as well as Brice Essomba, who wrote the music. A very sophisticated piece of music that doesn’t lose it’s simplicity and immediacy in spite of being quite a sophisticated piece of music."
-
You Changed Me
This song tells us that no matter what differences we have or the distance between us, love holds us together.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"Another example of the power of simplicity in music. Ingrid White’s voice kills me. A beautiful song that also, for me, strikes right to the heart of what we are talking about on this project. Change, and even more, the ability to change and evolve is the most basic element of growth and the transcending of the afflictive parts of our make-up as human beings. In the end, after all is said and done, there is nothing left but the love that is given and received. Everything else fades and disintegrates. Not wanting to get “preachy”, I do think that to communicate this idea, as the great Beatles did so eloquently, is the holy grail of songwriting, and these two talented women did it."
-
Saa’t Arahman
This piece is about a Yemenite wedding; the much too young bride sings it before her forced marriage. It is a painful dialogue between her and her father.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"This collaboration between Mor Karbasi and Moshe Elmakias is for me incredibly pertinent to the main thrust of the Beyond Foundation’s work. The setting of a Yemenite wedding, and the framing of intra-family conflict that must be resolved is a wonderful metaphor for dialog between cultures, countries and religions. Taking subjects like love, conflict, jealousy, selfishness etc from the macro perspective down to the micro-perspective of a family can be a very powerful tool to illustrate the idea that as human beings we must transcend tribal behavior in order to find the wealth of beauty that is available in cross-cultural collaboration."
-
Egyptian
This piece of music is the creative result of inspired minds from different countries, cultures and styles.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"I believe that this was the first collaboration that greatly impressed me! Although it melds together a number of musical traditions from different cultures, the braiding together of them is very natural. I was impressed with the episodic through-composed sections that alternate with the improvisational sections, and though being a long track, this undulation between specific structure and improvisation is compelling. Jivan Jr is a master duduk player who I have had the pleasure to work with before on an album for Madeleine Peyroux, and I am very impressed with Sasha Shlain’s keyboard skills and production ideas. The piece also incorporates the wonderful singing of Abdullah Alhussainy."
-
Better Together
The song breaks borders and merges musical styles such as EDM, Hip Hop & Pop and emphasizes a message of unity.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"This song by Ingrid White and Max Keller is a gem. Again, it strikes right to the heart of what is so valuable about collaboration across all of the imaginary and illusive boundaries that we think divide us. What seems scary and intimidating about collaboration is in fact only a mirage that our minds get caught in. In fact, whether it is between two people, or two cultures, collaboration is inspiring, energizing and takes us beyond the boundaries hat we set up for ourselves."
-
Your Heart Beats With Mine
This song tells us that when we embrace our differences, we can reach our full potential. The song title was changed to "Different, You and I" during the recordings.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"This collaboration has a beautiful simplicity, and a character that I felt would bring a nice dimension to the album. The voices of Elly Kellner and Heather Bond (Heather's presence on a few songs here is emblematic of the depth of her talent, and her ability to go in many different areas musically, shining bright in all of them). Elly’s voice as a writer and vocalist had an immediate appeal to me as well. Two immensely talented women!"
-
Upon the Horizon
It is important is to remind each other that regardless of where we come from, we are still looking up at the same sky.
Judging by Artistic Director Larry Klein
"This song hit me strongly right away. Simple and conversational language and Heather Bond’s beautiful and seductive voice grabs one right away, and Sasha Shlain’s keyboard work is inspired, fresh, spacious and most importantly not self consciously TRYING to do anything except to serve the lyric and to frame Heather’s voice in a simple and evocative manner."

Tanzania’s charismatic Gogo innovator Msafiri Zawose breaks open the circle of tradition, the flock of songs and tunes, beats and melodies his fellow musicians have relied on for generations. Jubilant voices dance over a broad palette of timbres like the buzzy bowed zeze. Swaying polyrhythms combine in tranced-out jams, only to shift into delicate filigree of malimba (thumb piano) and vocal counterpoint. It speaks to Msafiri’s simultaneous deep engagement with and playful reframing of tradition.

Born to a mother of Moroccan Sephardi heritage and a father of Persian ancestry, Jerusalem born singer, songwriter Mor Karbasi's music draws from exotic worldly sounds. Mor Karbasi burst onto the global music scene in 2008 with the release of her first album, and has continued to capture audiences internationally with her exceptional talent, stunning voice and her impressive stage presence. Mor’s first album ‘Beauty and the Sea’ (produced by Grammy award-winning producer Matt Howe and by multi-instrumentalist Joe Taylor) received rave reviews: she was immediately ranked alongside such globally renowned singers as Mariza and Estrella Morente – a splendid comparison, but one that does not describe her unique style of singing and compositions that breath new life into ancient languages: Spanish, Hebrew, Ladino and Moroccan Arabic. Mor has been performing worldwide, (Poland, UK, Spain, USA, Holland, Germany...), Recording and collaborating with the most exciting global artists today.

Creative, softhearted and receptive singer-songwriter from the Netherlands with Belgian roots. I play a 4-string guitar in special tuning, sometimes offering a dissonant siren but more often the gentle, warm whisper in your ear. I was part of the first Beyond Music project and had the pleasure to work with Larry Klein and record 'Same Sky' with so many wonderful musicians! In the past I also recorded and toured with Iain Matthews; Matthews Southern Comfort (UK) and went on tour with Shannon Lyon (CAN). Lyrically I try to go beyond existing taboo, into the core of my inner world, with the firm belief that there must be others who'll recognize the mutual experience and feel less alone as a result. When I am not making music I immerse myself in a variety of creative projects. I am self-taught with everything I create, both musically and creatively.

You gave me your heart, so I will take good care of it
You gave me your love, so I will take good care of it
We love you, we love you just the way you are3. EL CLAVEL DEL AIRE (Carnation of the Air)
iii gweee, ua langu ni zuri sana weee,
Ninapoliona ninaapagawa,
Mana kwa jinsi linavyong’ara,
Kila wakati linachanua,
Ni nalipenda mi langu ua
Quiero ser clavel del aire
Florecer en cualquier parte
No echar raíz, ir por ahí
Libre
Luciérnaga de la noche
Tu serás mi compañera
Flor silvestre seré
Njoo useme wewe
Nada tuve mientras quise
Hacer nido duradero
Es por eso que prefiero
Ser simplemente del viento
Njoo useme wewe
Jinsi linavyo nukia, jinsi linavyo pendeza,
Njoo uwone mwenywe, jinsi linavyo pendeza
Njoo ulione ua, ua langu mbona zuri
Mimi huwa nalipenda, kila mtu Analitaka
This is make me happy yeah
It is shining bright yeah, beautiful smell,
Makes me feel high
Njoo useme wewe
Jinsi linavyo pendezapendeza
na sisi tunavyo lipenda lipendaMy flower is very beautiful
When I see how it unfolds
The way it is shining
It always sprouts
I love my flower
I want to be the carnation of the air
Flourish anywhere
Not rooting, wandering around
Free
Firefly of the night
You will be my companion
Wild flower I will be
Come and say to you
I had nothing while I wanted
Built a durable nest
That's what I prefer
Just belong to the wind
Come witness
The way it smells, how beautiful it is
Come and witness yourself
How beautiful it is, come and see the flower
My beautiful flower, I love it, everyone wants it
This is make me happy yeah,
It is shining bright yeah, beautiful smell,
Makes me feel high
Come witness
How good it is with us
Free as we love it

When you are scared, full of doubt
And the tears are falling down,
in despair turn around
You find Him next to you
When You are alone, listen close,
And you will hear His voice,
Whisper hope, don't loose hope! You pray in a church
Because you’re exhausted
Because you can’t make it on your own
You pray because of too much pain
And sorrow
Don’t cry, don’t give up
After the rain, comes the sun
There is hope.. hope
Hope
Though the world is a bad place
With conflicts everywhere
With killers
With thieves
Don’t cry, don’t give up,
Sow love, peace will grow
Sow, Sow the love in your heart
You will see
After the rain comes hope
When you are scared, full of doubt
And the tears are falling down,
in despair turn around
You find Him next to you
When You are alone, listen close,
And you will hear His voice,
Whisper hope, don't loose hope!
5. YOU CHANGED ME
You changed me
You fill my heart with love
You changed me
You fill me with love
Where ever I go I know you’re there right beside me
We’re oceans away
Comfort I find in just knowing
Each time I look at the sky
I remember the stars in your eyes
You changed me
You sparked a light inside of me
You changed me
You make me believe
Believe in loveI didn't know what it was like to be in love
I didn't know what it was like to be happy
Then I met you and you changed everything
With you I know what the word happiness means
With you I can say anything, I can confide in you
You're all I'm looking for
You're everything I was hoping for
You changed me
You fill my heart with love
You changed me
You fill me with love
Where ever I go I know you’re there right beside me
We’re oceans away
Comfort I find in just knowing
Each time I look at the sky
I remember the stars in your eyes
You changed me
You sparked a light inside of me
You changed me
You make me believe
Believe in love6. SAA’T ARAHMAN

אני כאן למולך
אני כאן
אבל ציפורי שמיים
כבר מזמן נשאו אותי מכאן
Auspicious time has arrived my friends...
We are all together in life
I stand before you,
Here,
But the birds of the heaven
Have carried me away, long ago9. BETTER TOGETHER
You, you are the one I choose, choose
Where, where you are from I don’t care
Change, culture and colour won’t change a thing
Buy, what money can’t buy love can give
You don’t have to live alone
Because you and I we are greater
Nothing can bring us down
As long as we are together
Together we can stand
Together we can make it
Together we’re better
Together we’re stronger
Together we can be better
Trust me
Together nothing can stop us
Let’s go
I’ve tried to stand alone
But within a moment I was broken
I’ve tried to stand strong
But I broke down and crumbled
Because I needed a hand to lift me up
And I can’t be wrong any longer
Yeah with you, with you
I can only be greater
I need you, need you to shine and to be better
Better
Together nothing can stop us
Even the oceans can’t separate us
Let’s try to be the wind of peace
Thousand hands in the air are better than one
Together we’re better10. DIFFERENT, YOU AND I
I've been lost in silence
I've been so afraid to get up and sing my part
I wanted to go places, wanted to embrace
All the beauty in my heart
I look up at a shooting star
Across the open sky
And I hear your voice say it’s okay
When I can’t sleep at night
Sometimes it’s so hard to breathe
We’re different you and I
That’s what makes this world unique
Because your heart beats with mine
You have more to live for
You can reach so high
You can rise and touch the stars
You can carry on, sing your own sweet song
And embrace all that you are11. MORE OF US
More of us, more and more of us
12. UPON THE HORIZON
When you feel lonely
When you feel afraid
You want to disappear and hide yourself away
You think you’re the only
One who is lost
Believe me I know the way you feel and how it hurts
Just look upon the horizon
Fears wash away
Remember that we’re all fighting
To heal from the pain
We won’t give up
We are much stronger
When we believe love is the way
Just look upon the horizon
Fears wash away
I promise to listen
I promise to trust
I promise to hold your hand when you need picking up
We need each other more than we know
We are all dreamers underneath a sky that glows13. WE ARE ONE
We Are One
After all
Is said and done
We are one
We are one
On a Little Blue Ball
Under a Big Red Sun
We Are One
I went over
Crossed the ocean
Dug my hands
Into the earth
I was armored
From emotion
I’d been trained that way from birth
It’s easy just look everywhere
Everybody feeling so alone
I finally had to lose myself
To find out what I’ve always known
This is home here
Where we’re standing
These are skies
We have to share
The old ways
Can’t be abandoned
At the whim of a billionaire
I was blinded, I was unaware
I was turning into stone
I turned and saw you standing there
And suddenly I was home
